School of Basic Medical Sciences/Biomedical Sciences (BMS), Shandong University, as the main body of former Shandong Medical University, is one of the earliest medical schools in       China , with a long history dating back to Medical School of Cheeloo University founded in 1911. In 1952 Medical School of Cheeloo University, Shandong Provincial Medical College and East China Norman Bethune Medical College were united as Shandong Medical College and was renamed as Shandong Medical University in 1985. In July 2000, with the merge of Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology, the Department of Preclinical Medicine and the Department of Clinical Medicine of former Shandong Medical University were combined into the Shandong University School of Medicine and in June 2016, which was divided into School of Basic Medical Sciences/Biomedical Sciences and School of Clinical Medicine under the management of Cheeloo College of Medicine.
     

Over the past 100 years, the School of Basic Medical Sciences/Biomedical Sciences has fostered more than 30,000 outstanding talents and assembled a large number of celebrated experts and scholars enjoying both national and international prestige. They are the founders and pioneers of related disciplines of medicine in our country.

Nowadays, BMS is an important teaching and scientific research platform of Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University. There are ten departments, a national experimental teaching demonstration center and more than 250 staff, including 45 professors, 80 associate professors. There are 1 person selected in “Thousand Talents Program”, four Distinguished Professors and Chair Professors in “Cheung Kong Scholars Programme" of the Ministry of Education, 2 famous national teachers, 5 winners of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 2 winners of Excellent Youth Science Foundation from NSFC and 5 Distinguished Professors of “Taishan Scholars” in Shandong Province.

There are more than 2000 students in BMS, including more than 1200 undergraduates who major in clinical medicine (from first academic year to third academic year), more than 400 Master and PhD candidates of basic medical sciences, and nearly 300 international students major in MBBS. From 2019, BMS will set up Biomedical Sciences (undergraduate major). Based on the national strategic development need, BMS innovates in system, mechanism and personnel training mode, and integrates high-quality resources of biomedical sciences, keeping a foothold in elite training. In the aspect of scientific research training, BMS adopt the mode of "one-to-one tutorial system", focusing on the spirit of scientific research. Meanwhile, BMS also makes students contact with scientific research early and carry out the parallel mode of theoretical knowledge learning and scientific research innovation ability, which leading students transform from "the recipient of knowledge" to "the creator of knowledge". BMS devotes itself to educate inter-disciplinary and creative leading talents with international vision and wide learning.

BMS insists on building on subject construction, and actively promote the development of basic medical sciences/biomedical sciences, striving to create world first-class disciplines. BMS has 1 national key discipline in Human Anatomy & Histoembryology, 6 provincial key disciplines in Human Anatomy & Histoembryology, Immunology, Pathogenic Biology, Pathology & Pathophysiology, Genetics and Pharmacology, 3 key laboratories at provincial and ministerial level, which are the key laboratory of Experimental Teratology of Ministry of Education, the key laboratory of Mental Disease of Shandong Province (Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical), the key laboratory of infection immunity of Shandong province. Pharmacology & Toxicology, Neuroscience & Behavioral Sciences, Biology & Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology & Genetics enter into the top 1% of ESI.

To promote reform in teaching, scientific research and management system, BMS has established 19 course groups, 28 Scientific teams and 5 research centers covering oncology, neuroscience, immune microenvironment and diseases, metabolic disease and hereditary disease, aiming for establishing an outstanding basic medical subject group of international advanced level and innovative scientific research achievement. In the recent 5 years, the teaching faculty of BMS have undertaking over 200 national scientific research projects and more than 200 provincial-level projects including 9 national key projects, are supported with 172.4 million RMB scientific research funds. More than 900 academic papers were published and over 20 papers were in world-famous academic journals such as Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Nature Genetics, Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, PNAS, Cancer Cell, Journal of Clinical Investigation, The Journal of Experimental Medicine, Gut, and Gastroenterology.

Inheriting the fine tradition of Cheeloo Medical education, BMS takes it as its own duty to calculating medical talents with international vision, innovative thinking and practical ability and high sense of social responsibility. BMS has 2 national experimental teaching centers, 2 national teaching teams and 1 second prize of national teaching results. In 2018, the teaching results of digital anatomy and physiology respectively received the grand prize and second prize of provincial teaching results. Two personnel training programs were named the first pilot project in education and training program for excellence doctors of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health. BMS currently has 7 national high-quality resource sharing courses, 4 Bilingual model courses of the Ministry of Education, 4 national English teaching brand courses for students who study in China , 2 high-quality video open courses and 7 national high-quality online open courses. Besides, BMS edits in chief and publish 18 national planned textbooks for regular higher education (undergraduate) during “11th Five-Year Plan” to “13th Five-Year Plan" .

BMS attaches importance to inter-school exchanges and cooperation home and abroad. In recent years, it keeps close cooperation relationship with domestic and overseas universities including Karolinska Institutet and University of Toronto in student exchanges and scientific research. Nowadays BMS makes great efforts in medical international students’ education and the student number of government support project increases with each passing year.

Over the past century, the school has developed fine traditions of “Providing Relief to All in Need, Seeking Truth from Universal Wisdom” and “Relentless Pursuit of Perfection, Unselfish Devotion to Patients”.
